Internal changes in voters' decisions accompany external challenges. Migration—especially its irregular form—has brought strong gains for anti-European and anti-migration parties. Perhaps, with stronger representation in the national parliaments and the European Parliament, these parties will become less anti-European, but their concept of Europe is authoritarian, inward-looking, and isolationist. Geopolitics is not on their mind—except for the willingness to join the club of authoritarian-ruled countries. Authoritarian connections across national borders are the only globalization accepted and promoted by nationalists.

Two parallel worlds seem to exist in the Middle East. The world which is immediately present in our minds is one of conflicts, violence, and war. And that world took on a new profile by the attack of Hamas on October 7, 2023, and the answer of Israel in completely destructing Gaza and the war between Israel and Hezbollah. Nearly every minute a new element of brutality and killing adds to the vicious circle of violence. To think these days about peace may sound obscene. 

At a recent EUROPE-FUTURE-FORUM in Warsaw - organized by Visegrad Insight and Res Publica - experts from different countries and professional fields discussed the most urgent issues Europe must deal with. These issues are many and they are not easy to tackle. They would demand a full concentration of - basically united - decision-makers in Brussels and the different national capitals. The question is if they are willing and able to find some common lines and the resources to tackle the issues Europe is confronted with.

Betrachtet man die Entwicklung unserer Welt aus einer westlich - demokratischen Perspektive - durchaus in ihrer Realverfassung - so ergibt sich die Frage, mit welchen Begriffen die neuesten inner-westlichen und globalen Entwicklungen am besten zu fassen sind. Handelt es sich bloß um eine Umordnung wie sie fast permanent stattfindet oder um einen doch radikaleren Umbruch und leben wir daher in einer dramatischen Unordnung?

Die heurige Biennale in Venedig hatte sich den provokanten Titel „Fremde Überall“ gewählt und das Fremdsein von vielen Perspektiven aus beleuchtet! Wer ist fremd und wer fühlt sich als fremd? Mit diesen Fragestellungen wurde auch ein zentrales politisches Thema angeschnitten. Haben doch viele Menschen Angst vor „Überfremdung“ und wird diese Angst überdies politisch manipuliert. Dabei sollten wir uns bewusst sein, dass wie es der Kurator der Biennale Adriano Pedrosa formuliert, „die „Anderen“ eine Kategorie aus einer europäischen Perspektive ist.“

Die Verteidigung der Ukraine bzw. die schrittweise Heranführung der Ukraine - und von Moldawien - an die EU ist sicher eine der herausragendsten Aufgaben der neuen EU und NATO Spitze. Beides ist nicht unumstritten.
